Although there is a shortfall of 50 percent in the number of the police officers, according to international standards of public safety, the island of Cozumel is the safest city in the country.

On the island there is presence of the Navy of Mexico, the Mexican Army, Air Force and the Preventive Federal Police working in coordination with municipal authorities and maintaining consistently low crime rates.

Cozumel, for now, does not need more police patrols because the crime rate is lower than in other municipalities such as Othon P. Blanco, Benito Juárez and Solidarity, said Public Safety Director David Dominguez Povedano.

This has been achieved in Cozumel thanks to the three tiers of government in security working together in close collaboration.

International safety parameters indicate that for every 100 inhabitants, there must be a policeman.

There are almost 90 thousand inhabitants and taking into account this amount, the staffing of police patrols should be 900 policemen, that is one percent of the population.

However, because the armed forces and state and federal police working together with the direction of Public Safety, this deficit does not affect the community.

In this regard, the Director of Public Safety announced that they are already in talks with the commissioner of the Federal Preventive Police, which currently has a presence only in the international airport, to join the security operations.

Cozumel has the advantage of having the presence of the three institutions of the armed forces, which does not happen in any town, said a source inside the military forces. "This does not exist in any other municipality in the Republic," he said.

On the island are conducted meetings to discuss safety strategies in which staff of Research Center and National Security participates.

Recently, the state public security secretary, Miguel Angel Ramos Real, said that after his nomination after analyzing it was found that the main problem of insecurity is due to staff shortages of up to 100 percent.

This means that it takes approximately a thousand police officers statewide, but mainly in the three municipalities of greater importance in terms of territorial extension.

The coordinated efforts with armed forces and the insularity of San Miguel de Cozumel, have allowed that the town does not fall into these parameters of insecurity.
