We spent Wednesday on the beautiful trimaran the Tucan, although that was the only day we had a little rain, and they were never able to hoist the sails. We were still able to snorkel though, and when the sun came out in the afternoon we spent an hour or so on a beautiful stretch of deserted beach and swam, shelled and just enjoyed the solitude. The crew prepared us yummy snacks and a delicious lunch, and we could help ourselves to all the beverages we could handle. There were only 13 of us on the boat and our sailing companions were all really nice people. We had lots of fun that day.
Of course we spent a day driving the beautiful east side of the island in the VW Bug convertible we rented from Margarita at Rentadora Isis (such a nice lady!), stopping at Coconuts for a delicious lunch of fish tacos and cerveza, and then to Chen Rio for a little swimming, but not going out too far as the current was really strong that day.
And we had a lovely time at the Zocolo on Sunday evening, had a unique experience at Chadraui, and even managed to finally visit the Museum this trip!
The week went by way too fast as it always does, but we will be back again as soon as possible. Hopefully, we will be able to stay longer next time.

Good report. Thanks. I hate writing them. Just remembering and thinking back make you so sad and so happy at the same time. Tell us about Chedraui.

We went to Chedraui on Monday night to pick up a few things. When we arrived at the cash register it was about 10 minutes past 9 p.m. The couple in front of us at the register drank a few cans of beer each while they were shopping. I guess they did not know the law (which we did not know either until a very nice gentleman pointed it out to us before we headed for the register), that you cannot purchase liquor after 9 p.m. They presented these empty cans to the young lady at the registered and tried to pay for them. She was trying to explain that she could not ring these items up, that they would not scan since it was after 9 p.m., and this set off a big argument. The couple spoke Spanish so we couldn't understand everything being said, but they kept yelling at the young lady at the cash register, and throwing money at her to pay for the beer, and she kept handing it back to them. The store manager came over to the register and the yelling and money throwing continued. A few minutes later a police officer arrived and there was more yelling. As we were leaving Chedraui, there were several more police officers dealing with this couple and we think they were being arrested!
Also, when we were leaving, we were stopped at the door by a man and asked to show our receipt even though the register we had just checked out at was right next to where this man was standing and he could clearly see that we had paid for the groceries, especially with all the commotion going on with this other couple. I had read about this practice on this board, so when I saw him, I had the receipt handy, gave it to him, and politely answered his questions, until he started going into his time-share talk. At that point, I took the receipt out of his hands, thanked him for his interest in our stay, and we walked out, and did not look back. I forget what his nametag said, but it looked very official and intimidating. I wish someone would get them to stop doing this. I think next year we will skip Chedraui for the few things we need and go to one of the other markets instead.

Well that is amusing. The other couple could well have talked themselves into more trouble than it was in the beginning. Often folks drinking tend to do that when simply shutting up and going with the flow gets you a free walk.
About that time-share deal. It stinks! I of course noticed this almost when they allowed it to start. They seldom bother anybody local and even gringos like myself get recognized and are never approached, but it really stinks that tourist can be caught in a situation where they feel they are dealing with store management and it turns out to be a sales pitch for time share.
I might try to find a way for some of us to write to Chedraui and try to terminate this unpleasantness.
Thanks for the stories though!

I am very much in favor of writing a letter to Chedraui to try and get them to stop the time-share people from doing this to folks as they leave the market. If I didn't know ahead of time that this was most likely a time-share representative, we would have felt very initimidated by this person. It's just a real turn-off, and definitely not good for the tourist trade. Thanks for looking into the situation.

You've said something here that gives me an idea. Of course this time-share stuff is all a ligitimate business and important to the hotel industry, generating literally millions of dollars in revenues. It is certain that Royal Holiday, the company whose representatives I have seen at Chedraui, is paying the store something for the "prime traffic" location. These forces are hard to negate.
Since you mention it being "not good for the tourist trade", why not ask out resident representative of the Department of Tourism in their special part of this forum? We want to be nice of course and the Department probably has no authority over the situation at all, but you'll be calling official attention to something they may not have considered or even be aware of.

TNTIII, do you want to make that inquiry since it was your real experience?
